Know a bit about kidney transplantation

Two individuals are involved in kidney transplantation: the donor from whose body a kidney is removed and the recipient (yourself, perhaps) into whose body the kidney is transplanted.

The kidney donor may be either:
  • Someone who is alive and wishes voluntarily to donate one of his or her healthy kidneys.
  • Someone who has just died.
The kidney recipient is,
  • a man or a woman of any age,
  • who suffers from kidney failure that is untreatable by other means,
  • who is well enough to undergo a major operation,
  • and whose blood group is compatible with the blood group of the kidney donor.
