After the operation and beyond

Pain and discomfort

For the first few days after your operation you can expect to feel moderate amounts of pain and soreness in your tummy and you will be given appropriate pain-killers. There will be tubes going in and out of your body that are used to monitor your progress, give you fluids and drain any collections of blood and urine. They are routine and don’t normally stay in long.

Getting back on your feet

You will be encouraged to get out of bed as soon as possible such as the next day. There will be someone to help you. Steadily you will get back to walking about and going up and down stairs.

Continuing your fluid balance

You will be encouraged to drink three litres of fluid a day whilst in hospital and it’s important to continue to drink two to three litres when you go home.
