The British Transplant Games
The British Transplant Games were first staged in Portsmouth in 1978 with approximately 100 competitors. This was a one-day event, which has now grown to a 4 day annual event with over 500 competitors.
The Transplant Games are staged in various locations throughout the UK during the summer with this year’s event being held 7th – 11th August 08 in Sheffield.
The Games allow transplant recipients to raise public awareness of the importance of organ donation as well as encouraging their fitness after a transplant. In addition to it being a sporting event, it has a social side where long lasting friendships are formed.
The South West Transplant Centre has a team, consisting of transplant recipients from Plymouth, Cornwall and Dorset, competing in activities from cricket ball throw to snooker, from swimming to athletics.
This year the South West Transplant Centre team gained 14 gold medals, 4 silver medals, 2 Bronze medals, 2 Trophies. A Medal for the best Amateur Archer from the Archery Club of Great Britain.
Five of the team have been selected to represent GB at the World Transplant Games in 2009.
